It is too young to become a member of the army Horse Transport

Bild von National Library of Scotland
Two weeks old colt born in the British lines in France, outside the ward of a Vet Hospital, where its mother is receiving treatment. In the foreground, a man is holding a young foal. Behind it there is an open fronted lean-to shed where horses are being treated by Army vets. One dappled horse can be seen with a sling under its belly, suspending it from the roof by chains. This is probably being got back to its feet after an operation. To the right there is a horse with a bandaged leg.
The Army Veterinary Corps was founded in 1903. During World War I they treated over 2.5 million animals including horses, mules, dogs and carrier pigeons. In 1918 they became the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.

Listening to His Master’s voice

Bild von National Library of Scotland
Soldiers sitting round a gramophone listening to music. The ‘Iron Cavalry’ have their mascots like other regiments. Listening to His Master’s voice. They appear to be in a camp and look off duty and relaxed.
During the war many soldiers kept dogs, and other animals, as pets or mascots. Scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to boost morale amongst the troops and provide reassurance to those at home.

Kindness to animals

Bild von National Library of Scotland
A sergeant, wrapped in his greatcoat against the cold, reading a notice nailed to a tree. The notice reads, ‘Kindness to animals, 500 horses lamed weekly by nails dropped on roads and horse lines by cookers carrying firewood with nails left in. Please remove nails’. Much of the firewood used at the Front would have been timber salvaged from ruined buildings, so nails would have been a considerable problem.
The army during World War I was very dependant on horses and mules for transport of guns, ammunition and other heavy goods, as well as for the cavalry. They could not afford needless casualties even though, at the rate of 500 lamed per week, this was still less than one percent of the total of over 2,500,000 horses treated in 1914 alone.

Mascot of the Royal Scots

Bild von National Library of Scotland
A young soldier of the Royal Scots Regiment holding a black goat kid. As the French farmers were forced to flee their homes many animals were inevitably abandoned. Some undoubtedly ended up in the cooking pot, but others like this kid seem to have been adopted as good luck mascots.
The Royal Scots raised 35 battalions during World War I, of which 15 were on overseas service. The Regiment not only served in the Western Front, but also in the Dardanelles, Macedonia, Egypt and Northern Russia.
[Original reads: 'The mascot of the Royal Scots.']
This goat is the battery’s mascot

Bild von National Library of Scotland
A young gunner sitting directly in front of the camera. He is in uniform and has the letters ‘R.G.A.’ on his lapel. Next to him a small goat is eating out of a metal container. The surrounding area is rough and uneven, and covered with patchy grass.
During the war, animals were adopted as pets or mascots by a lot of individual soldiers and their units.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. THE BATTLE OF MENIN ROAD. This goat is the battery's mascot. It is here seen sharing a gunner's ration.']
